The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented a ruling issued by the Dongola General Court on 27 April 2026, dismissing all charges brought against political activist Moneeb Abdel Aziz, declaring his acquittal due to insufficient evidence, and ordering his subsequent release.
According to CFJ’s documentation, the Public Prosecution had charged the activist under Articles (62), (66), and (69) of the Sudanese Criminal Code, in addition to Articles (24) and (26) of the Cybercrimes Act. The charges included allegations related to inciting hatred, spreading false news, and incitement to rebellion.
The information indicates that the case dates back to December 2025, following Abdel Aziz’s arrest in the Maqasir area near Dongola, in connection with his participation in a peaceful event commemorating the December Revolution. He remained detained before being released on bail during the course of the trial.
During court sessions that began on 8 February 2026, the court heard submissions from both the prosecution and the defense, before ultimately deciding to dismiss the charges due to lack of sufficient evidence, the absence of the material element of the crime, and lack of criminal intent.
The Committee for Justice stated that the ruling underscores the importance of adhering to fair trial guarantees and affirms the need to refrain from using legal provisions to restrict peaceful activity or target activists.
CFJ calls for respect for public freedoms, ensuring that individuals are not prosecuted for peaceful activities, and upholding the rule of law and legal standards in judicial proceedings.
