Egypt: Committee for Justice Documents Deaths of Three Political Detainees in Custody Within 48 Hours

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the deaths of three political detainees inside places of detention in Egypt within a period of less than 48 hours. The deceased are Engineer Moaz Abdel Salam Shoaib, Hamdy Darwish, and Mohamed Fahmy Mohamed Sharaf El-Din.

Engineer Moaz Abdel Salam Shoaib died inside Badr Prison after nearly four years in detention. His death followed a deterioration in his health condition as a result of cancer.

Hamdy Darwish, 51, died in the care unit of Badr Medical Center on 9 August 2026, after suffering a severe decline in his health due to gastrointestinal cancer. Darwish was from Shalqan village, part of Qanater El-Khairiya District in Qalyubia Governorate.

In the third case, Mohamed Fahmy Mohamed Sharaf El-Din, 37, from Shubra El-Nakhla village in Belbeis District, Sharqia Governorate, died inside 10th of Ramadan Prison while serving a sentence with only one year remaining before its completion.

Accordingly, the number of deaths documented by the Committee for Justice inside prisons and detention facilities across Egypt since the beginning of 2026 has risen to 44 cases. This follows the documentation of 60 deaths during 2025.
