Sudan: Committee for Justice Documents the Detention of Dozens of Civilians in West Kordofan and Calls for Ensuring Freedom of Movement and Protection of Civilians

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the detention by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of dozens of travelers, including women, children, and patients, in areas of West Kordofan State, while they were en route to the city of El Obeid in North Kordofan State, amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions and a severe shortage of water and basic services.

According to CFJ’s documentation, RSF forces stopped dozens of vehicles carrying hundreds of civilians coming from the Darfur region toward central and northern Sudan, detaining them in various locations in West Kordofan, including the “Saq’ Al‑Jamal” area and the city of Al‑Mazroub.

Local sources indicated that some families remained stranded for days under harsh conditions, facing difficulty accessing drinking water and rising prices, with those detained including women, children, and patients.

The information further noted that the forces had allowed travelers to pass through these routes in previous months, before recently resuming restrictions, detaining a number of vehicles and turning them back from the road leading to El Obeid.

The Committee for Justice expressed concern over the impact of these measures on civilians’ safety and their right to freedom of movement, particularly in light of the complex humanitarian conditions in conflict‑affected areas.

CFJ calls for the immediate release of all detained civilians, ensuring that travelers are not obstructed or subjected to harassment, and stresses the need to respect the rules of international humanitarian law, which guarantee the protection of civilians and the facilitation of their safe passage.
