The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented incidents of physical torture and arbitrary detention affecting detainees inside security facilities in the cities of Benghazi and Zliten, amid growing concerns over the escalation of violations related to ill‑treatment and detention outside the framework of the law.
According to CFJ’s documentation, circulated footage showed two individuals being subjected to assault, humiliation, and physical torture inside the Criminal Investigation Department at the Benghazi Security Directorate. The footage showed a security officer assaulting the detainees after abducting and detaining them, before filming the incident and publishing it on social media.
The Committee for Justice stated that these incidents constitute a serious violation of human rights and an undermining of the rule of law, involving practices that may amount to crimes of abduction, unlawful deprivation of liberty, torture, and abuse of authority, in addition to cruel and degrading treatment prohibited under national laws and international conventions.
CFJ also followed complaints regarding the case of citizen Milad Hassan Milad Al‑Jahideri, who was subjected to arbitrary arrest, torture, threats, and ill‑treatment by members of the Criminal Investigation Department in Zliten on 9 May 2026, before being released after two days without being presented before the Public Prosecution or subjected to any legal procedures.
The Committee for Justice stressed that the continuation of such violations inside places of detention reflects a worrying escalation in practices of arbitrary detention and torture, calling for the opening of independent investigations, accountability for those responsible, and ensuring the protection of detainees and respect for their legal and human rights.
