The Committee for Justice (CFJ) expressed deep concern over the continued uncertainty surrounding the fate of Libyan Member of Parliament Ibrahim Al‑Darsi, following more than two years of enforced disappearance since 16 May 2024, after he was abducted in the city of Benghazi following his participation in a military event marking the anniversary of Operation “Dignity”, without any disclosure of his place of detention or official information regarding his fate to date.
The Committee considers that the continued concealment of Al‑Darsi for this prolonged period, in the absence of investigation results or any legal accountability, reflects the growing pattern of impunity and serious human rights violations, foremost among them enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention, particularly in areas under the control of de facto authorities in eastern Libya.
CFJ also noted that video footage circulated in recent months, showing Ibrahim Al‑Darsi in harsh detention conditions and bearing signs of torture and extreme exhaustion, has raised serious concerns about his physical and psychological well‑being, and has intensified local and international calls to uncover the truth and ensure accountability for those responsible.
The Committee for Justice emphasized that enforced disappearance constitutes a grave violation of international human rights law and is not subject to statutes of limitation, and that the continued detention of any individual outside the framework of the law poses a direct threat to the rule of law and undermines confidence in justice institutions.
CFJ calls on the Libyan authorities to open an independent and transparent investigation into the disappearance of Ibrahim Al‑Darsi, to immediately disclose his fate and whereabouts, ensure his safety and legal rights, and hold accountable all those responsible for his disappearance and any violations he may have suffered during detention.
