Press release

The Egyptian preacher and former Al-Azhar University professor, Dr. Mahmoud Shaaban, announced on Monday, August 26, that he is on a hunger strike to protest his re-detention in connection with a new case.

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has reported that Shaaban was informed he would be held in custody pending investigation in a new case, number 595 of 2021, amidst numerous violations he has been subjected to during his detention in case number 771 of 2019, overseen by the Supreme State Security Prosecution. Shaaban is currently held in solitary confinement in Cell 430 at Wadi El-Natrun Prison.

CFJ affirms its solidarity with Shaaban and rejects all arbitrary actions taken against him. CFJ calls on the Egyptian authorities to cease the policy of “renewed detention,” which prevents activists and opposition voices from being released from prison and keeps them behind bars in violation of Egyptian law and international treaties it has signed.

CFJ also calls on Egypt to release preacher Mahmoud Shaaban and end the arbitrary measures against him.
