Press release
Geneva – August 19, 2024
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has condemned the storming of the United Nations Human Rights Office in Sana’a by the “Ansar Allah” authorities. He described the entry as “unauthorized” and the confiscation of documents and seizure of property as “flagrant violations of UN privileges and immunities.”
Türk emphasized that these actions severely impede the UN’s mission, particularly in promoting and protecting human rights. He stated, “Entering the UN office without permission and forcibly seizing documents and property is entirely contrary to UN privileges and immunities. This is also a serious attack on the UN’s ability to fulfill its mandate.”
Immediate Evacuation:
Türk called on the “Ansar Allah” forces to evacuate the building immediately and return all seized assets. This incident follows the detention of 13 UN staff members in June, including six from the Human Rights Office, as well as over 50 workers from a non-governmental organization. Two UN staff members have already been held incommunicado since late 2021 and mid-2023.
Suspension of UN Operations in Sana’a:
In light of these events, the UN has temporarily suspended its operations in Sana’a and other areas under “Ansar Allah” control, although activities continue in other parts of Yemen. Despite multiple appeals, the detained staff remain in custody, with reports indicating that one was forced to make a false confession.
Türk reiterated the baselessness of the charges against the UN staff and urged “Ansar Allah” to release them immediately. He highlighted the crucial role of the UN Human Rights Office in Yemen, which focuses on protecting civilians, documenting the impacts of the conflict, and advocating for the rights of vulnerable groups.
The High Commissioner called for respect for the UN’s independence and the immediate release of all detained staff to ensure the continuation of vital humanitarian work in Yemen.
