Press Release

The Tunisian authorities in Gabès governorate released the student and civil activist, Mawadda Al-Jama’i, on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, after detaining her for approximately 24 hours. She was charged with several offenses related to Decree 54 and accused of defaming the Tunisian president because of a post in which she criticized him on social media.

Judicial sources reported that although Al-Jama’i has been released, the case against her remains open before the Tunisian courts.

The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) condemns the referral of Mawadda Al-Jama’i for trial due to her opinions and demands that all arbitrary measures against her be halted, as well as an end to the targeting of her because of her views. CFJ also calls for the suspension and revision of Decree 54 to ensure its alignment with international treaties and conventions that Tunisia has signed and is obliged to implement.
