Press release

Geneva – March 17, 2024

Abeer Moussa, Tunisian lawyer, human rights defender, and the head of the Free Destourian Party, declared her hunger strike on Monday, March 11, 2024, denouncing the alleged mistreatment she endured during her detention.

Abeer Moussa’s defense team announced her decision to commence a hunger strike, citing grievances against her treatment while detained in the civil prison in Manouba. Moussa’s protest targets what her defense characterizes as a widening circle of abuse against the Free Constitutional Party’s leadership, alleging

obstruction of their activities in contravention of domestic and international laws safeguarding human rights and freedoms.

This latest hunger strike is not the first for Moussa, who protested in November against perceived infringements on her political liberties. She was arrested last October after attempting to file a complaint at a police station near the presidential palace in Carthage. She faced charges, including data processing violations and actions purportedly aimed at disrupting public order.

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has voiced solidarity with Moussa, emphasizing the right to strike as a fundamental human right enshrined in Tunisian law and international agreements. The CFJ urges Tunisian authorities to release Moussa and other detained activists promptly and without conditions while also urging improvements in detention conditions and a halt to alleged abuses.
