Press Release

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) is participating in a side event organized by Nazra for Feminist Studies during the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, on September 19, 2024, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Room 25. The event is titled “Violence against Women and Girls in the Middle East and North Africa.”

The event aims to address gender-based violence in the Middle East and North Africa, highlighting the challenges faced by monitoring and evaluation missions in countries such as Sudan, Yemen, and Libya, particularly in relation to women’s empowerment, peace, and security.

The event will also discuss the difficulties in documenting gender-based violence due to social norms and the restrictions on international mechanisms.

In addition, the discussions will focus on how feminist movements are confronting these challenges, sharing lessons learned, and providing recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of mechanisms to combat gender-based violence.

The event will also discuss the joint report submitted by CFJ and “Nazra” to the Sudanese fact-finding mission, presenting a regional feminist approach to supporting the women, peace, and security agenda in Sudan.

A distinguished group of speakers will participate in the event, including H.E. Mrs. Lena Mahgoub Former Minister of Labour & Social Development – Transitional Government of Sudan and CWPAR Board Member; Mozn Hassan, an Egyptian feminist and founder of “Nazra for Feminist Studies”; Mr. Abdelkhalig Shaib, Sudanese Attorney and Adviser on Sudan’s constitution and politics; Usame Mehmetoglu, UN and Regional Communication Officer at CFJ; and the event will be moderated by Ms. Rahaf Abu Shahin, Executive Director at the Caucus of Women in Politics in the Arab Region.

This event represents an important opportunity to shed light on the conflicts in the region, particularly the unspoken conflict in Sudan, and to express solidarity with the Sudanese people in their efforts toward peace.
