Sudan: 56 Civilians, Including Children, Killed in Attack on a Wedding in Kutum as Calls for Investigation Mount

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the killing of 56 civilians, including 17 children, and the injury of 107 others, following an attack that targeted a wedding celebration in the Al‑Salam neighborhood of Kutum, Darfur, after a drone strike carried out on Wednesday evening.

According to CFJ’s documentation, the attack struck a civilian gathering during a social event, resulting in a high number of casualties. Rescue operations remain ongoing amid extremely complex humanitarian conditions.

Preliminary information indicates that the Sudanese Armed Forces may be responsible for the attack, though no official statement has been issued to date. The incident comes amid continued military escalation in Darfur and growing threats to civilian lives.

CFJ stated that targeting a civilian gathering constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law and may amount to a war crime, given the intentional or reckless attack on civilians during a non‑military event.

The Committee for Justice calls for the launch of an independent, transparent international investigation to uncover the circumstances of the attack, identify those responsible, and ensure accountability. CFJ also urges the adoption of urgent measures to protect civilians and to end the ongoing targeting of civilian populations in conflict‑affected areas.
