The Committee for Justice (CFJ) welcomed the announcement by authorities in eastern Libya regarding the release of ten international activists who had been detained since 24 May 2026 in connection with their participation in a solidarity convoy heading to the Gaza Strip.
CFJ had previously documented the detention of volunteers and activists after they were stopped in the city of Sirte while participating in the convoy, before being transferred to a detention facility in Benghazi. Information available at the time indicated that they faced restrictions on communication with their lawyers and family members, while several of them reportedly launched a hunger strike in protest of their continued detention.
According to statements by the authorities, the release of the ten detainees was carried out pursuant to a decision issued by the Attorney General at the Benghazi Court of Appeal, accompanied by the initiation of procedures for their deportation outside Libyan territory.
The Committee for Justice stressed that the release of the detainees constitutes a positive step, while emphasizing the need to ensure that no individual is subjected to arbitrary detention because of participation in peaceful humanitarian activities. CFJ further called for respect for due process guarantees, including the right to communicate with lawyers and family members, and for ensuring the safety and well‑being of all individuals during detention and throughout any subsequent legal or administrative procedures.
