Libya: Committee for Justice Documents the Continued Enforced Disappearance of Abubakr Al‑Darwish for Five Years and Calls for Disclosure of His Fate

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the continued enforced disappearance of Libyan citizen Abubakr Mohamed Abdel Latif Al‑Darwish (50 years old) since his arrest on 24 July 2021, without being brought before a competent judicial authority or granted the legal guarantees provided under the law.

According to information documented by CFJ, Al‑Darwish was arrested from his home by elements affiliated with Battalion 103 in the Western Coastal Region, without his family being informed of the reasons for his arrest or the legal basis for his detention. Available information indicates that he remains held by an entity known as the “Department for Destructive Phenomena”, while continuing to be denied regular communication with his family and without any disclosure of his legal status.

The Committee for Justice is following with concern the continued detention of Al‑Darwish outside the framework of the law and the serious concerns this raises regarding his safety and his right to personal liberty, particularly given that he has remained detained for several years without trial or effective judicial oversight.

CFJ calls for the immediate disclosure of his place of detention and legal status, ensuring his ability to communicate with his family and lawyer, and guaranteeing that he is brought before a competent judicial authority. The Committee further calls for his release in the absence of a legitimate legal basis for his continued detention, in a manner consistent with Libya’s obligations under national law and international human rights standards.
