The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented ongoing violations reportedly affecting detainees at the Main Correction and Rehabilitation Institution in Tripoli (Mitiga Prison), including allegations of torture, ill‑treatment, denial of family visits, and restrictions on access to legal counsel, as well as delays in presenting a number of detainees before the Public Prosecution and competent courts within the legally prescribed timeframes.
According to information documented by CFJ, families and relatives of detainees organized a protest vigil on Monday, 6 July 2026, in front of the Council of Ministers headquarters on Al‑Sikka Road in Tripoli, protesting detention conditions inside the prison and demanding an end to violations and respect for detainees’ legal rights.
The Committee for Justice emphasized that ensuring the safety of detainees, prohibiting torture and ill‑treatment, enabling detainees to communicate with their lawyers and family members, and presenting them before judicial authorities within the legally mandated periods are all fundamental guarantees protected under national legislation and international human rights standards.
CFJ calls for the opening of an investigation into the reported violations inside Mitiga Prison, ensuring respect for the rights of all detainees, and taking the necessary measures to hold accountable those responsible for any violations proven against them, in a manner that safeguards detainees’ rights and upholds the rule of law.
