The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has monitored the death of two more workers who had been injured in the explosion at the new power station of the Mahalla Textile Factory, raising the total number of casualties to three workers. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, February 22, continues to have serious consequences.
Worker Ayman Abu Al-Fadl passed away on Tuesday, February 25, followed by his colleagues Mohamed Atwa and Mohamed Kassab, who succumbed to their severe injuries on Wednesday, February 26, after days of suffering in the hospital.
The explosion resulted in burn injuries of varying severity for four workers. One of them, Mohamed El-Sayed Abu Al-Einen, remains hospitalized amid concerns over his deteriorating condition.
CFJ states that this tragic accident highlights the persistent neglect of occupational health and safety standards in Egyptian industrial facilities, a problem that leads to and continues to lead to numerous injuries and fatalities every year.
CFJ calls for an urgent review of factory and industrial site inspection procedures to ensure adherence to safety standards. The committee also urges the relevant authorities to conduct an immediate investigation into the causes of the explosion, identify any negligence or misconduct that contributes to the disaster, and hold those responsible accountable. Furthermore, CFJ stresses the need to prevent similar incidents in the future and to provide sufficient support and justice for the victims’ families and the injured.
