The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has reported the death of Abdel-Salam Mahmoud Sadouma, an engineer detained from the Awsim district in Giza Governorate. Sadouma passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was transferred to Om Al-Masryeen Hospital in Giza following a severe deterioration in his health and took his last breath on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
The committee confirmed that Sadouma’s death highlights the persistence of medical neglect in Egyptian prisons amidst a rising number of violations against detainees. It noted that such violations underscore the urgent need to improve detainees’ conditions and uphold their fundamental rights in line with humanitarian and legal standards.
CFJ calls for an impartial, swift, and transparent investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding Sadouma’s death, hold those responsible accountable, and ensure no impunity for such actions.
This marks the first death in detention documented by CFJ in 2025. The committee previously recorded 50 deaths in custody during 2024. Comprehensive information on deaths in detention in Egypt is available through the “Justice Watch Archive,” a service offered by the Committee for Justice. This archive includes detailed data on over 14,000 victims, more than 30,000 violations, and monitors abuses across more than 500 detention centers in Egypt.
