Egypt: CFJ Monitors Protest by Workers at Sewaf and Nozha Water Stations in Alexandria, Advocates for Their Demands

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

Workers at the drinking water and sanitation stations in the Sewaf and Nozha areas of Alexandria staged a two-hour protest on Sunday, January 12. The protest focused on advocating for the implementation of several professional and financial rights.

The protesters demanded the enforcement of final court rulings that mandate the calculation of differences in their special allowances. They also called for the cessation of deducting 7% from the value of the special allowance and its inclusion in the total salary without being merged into the basic salary, aiming to prevent disparities in wages.

In addition, the workers requested the payment of the 2017 allowance, which they have not received, and stressed the importance of introducing a unified financial policy that covers all employees of the Holding Company for Drinking Water and Sanitation nationwide. This is especially pressing as workers face significant discrepancies in financial allocations between those in Greater Cairo and other governorates.

They also called for an increase in the meal allowance from EGP 200 to EGP 1,000 to keep pace with rising costs and meet their daily needs.

In response, the administration promised to convey the workers’ demands to the officials of the Holding Company. This assurance led to the conclusion of the two-hour protest.

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) reaffirmes full support for the station workers and urges constructive engagement with their legitimate financial demands amidst the severe economic crisis gripping Egypt. The committee also calls on the Ministry of Labor to advocate for the workers’ demands to ensure their financial and moral rights are safeguarded.
