Geneva – May 1, 2024

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the announcement by Egyptian blogger and activist, Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed Redwan (known as Mohamed Oxygen), of his hunger strike protesting the dire living conditions he faces in detention.

According to a post on his Facebook page, “Oxygen” declared his hunger strike on April 13th, citing inhumane conditions including insects and mistreatment.

“Oxygen” is currently serving a four-year sentence under Case No. 1228 of 2021 related to state security offenses. He attempted suicide in his cell at Tora Prison in southern Cairo due to harsh treatment and restricted visitation.

CFJ reaffirms its solidarity with Egyptian activist and blogger Mohamed Oxygen in his hunger strike, viewing it as a fundamental human right given the circumstances, and calls on prison management to open dialogue channels with him and meet his demands, which represent the minimum of his human rights as a detainee.
