On Thursday, January 9, 2025, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has reported the worsening health condition of former Tunisian MP and civil activist Rashed Al-Khiari, who is currently serving a six-month prison sentence.
The committee revealed that Al-Khiari is battling a malignant tumor that is spreading rapidly through his body, placing his life at significant risk.
CFJ emphasized that his condition requires urgent medical intervention outside prison facilities, a necessity previously recommended by the prison doctor. Despite his critical health, authorities continue to detain him without providing the necessary conditions for adequate treatment.
– A Pattern of Arbitrary Sentences
Rashed Al-Khiari had previously served a prison term of over two years before being handed a new sentence on September 27, 2024, related to a complaint accusing him of “insulting others via public communication networks.”
Despite his deteriorating health, the sentence was executed swiftly and inexplicably, with Al-Khiari imprisoned just hours after the ruling, even though prison administration offices were reportedly closed at the time. This points to an apparent misuse of power in handling his case. Al-Khiari was also denied his right to a defense, unable to present any legal arguments, despite the complainant in the case, journalist Hamza Balloumi, having withdrawn the charges against him.
Condemnation and Accountability
CFJ strongly condemns the Tunisian authorities’ deliberate medical negligence concerning Rashed Al-Khiari’s deteriorating health. The committee calls for his immediate release and holds the authorities fully accountable for his physical and mental safety.
CFJ further urges the cessation of retaliatory legal actions targeting Al-Khiari, particularly given the complainant’s withdrawal of legal pursuit. The committee stresses the importance of ensuring a safe and fair legal environment for political activists and human rights defenders, who continue to face unjust legal threats and pressures.
