Tunisia: CFJ Monitors the Deterioration of Nour El-dine Al-Bhiri’s Health and Holds Tunisian Authorities Responsible

The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has monitored the deterioration of the health condition of Ennahda leader and former Tunisian minister Nour El-dine Al-Bhiri, who was urgently transferred to “Rabta” Hospital in Tunis following the worsening of his condition in detention.

Al-Bhiri faces multiple legal cases and suffers from severe health deterioration due to what his family and lawyers describe as “harsh treatment and medical neglect” in detention. They express serious concerns about the continued violation of his fundamental rights, especially as he remains in custody despite his defense team’s calls for his release or at least adequate medical care.

CFJ stresses that Al-Bhiri’s health condition is not an isolated case but rather reflects a broader deterioration in the rights of political detainees in Tunisia. The committee points out that the judiciary is being used as a tool to suppress political opponents and that such practices constitute a blatant violation of Tunisian national laws and international treaties guaranteeing fair trials and healthcare for prisoners—agreements that the Tunisian authorities have signed.

CFJ expresses deep concern over the alarming developments regarding Al-Bhiri’s safety, holding the Tunisian authorities fully responsible for his life, particularly in light of reports confirming that he has been subjected to severe violations since his arrest in December 2021. The committee also calls on UN mechanisms and the international community to intervene urgently to save Al-Bhiri’s life, investigate his detention conditions, and ensure he receives immediate medical
