Press Release
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored a rise in legal actions against activists in Tunisia due to their support for the Palestinian cause, the latest being the referral of activist Ghassan Boughediri to the Judicial Pole for Counter-Terrorism.
Sources have indicated that Tunisian authorities summoned “Boughediri” for questioning after he published pro-Palestine posts in which he called for the blockade of activities by embassies that support the (Israeli) aggression. Authorities deemed these calls a threat to public security.
Strict procedures at the primary court in Beja:
Boughediri appeared before the Primary Court in Beja, where he faced charges related to threatening public order. His case was subsequently transferred to the specialized judicial unit for counter-terrorism, sparking widespread concern among activists and freedom of expression advocates.
Criticism and calls to drop charges
CFJ has voiced alarm over the increasing prosecution of Tunisian activists for their political opinions and expressions, asserting that such measures restrict freedom of expression, especially on issues concerning the Palestinian cause, which enjoys strong support among the Tunisian public.
CFJ calls on Tunisian authorities to drop the charges against Boughediri and release him, emphasizing that freedom of expression is a basic human right.
