The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) held a virtual press conference on January 20, 2025, to provide detailed information about the fact-finding mission established to monitor the situation in Sudan in light of ongoing human rights violations resulting from the conflict.

– Call for Submissions and Documentation:

The press conference included an explanation of the mission’s mandate and scope of work, along with an open invitation for submissions and contributions to help document human rights violations that have occurred since the start of the conflict in Sudan.

The event aimed to raise awareness about the fact-finding mission launched by the African Commission, explain its scope of work, and provide details about the procedures it will follow to gather data and testimonies on reported violations. It also highlighted the importance of the mission in documenting these violations and producing objective reports to address the current situation.

The press conference emphasized an open call for contributions to document human rights abuses, encouraging individuals, civil society organizations, human rights institutions, and international organizations to submit reports and data. This effort seeks to build a comprehensive database to support the Commission’s ongoing work in addressing human and humanitarian issues in Sudan.

– Mission Details and Procedures:

The Sudan Fact-Finding Mission is a hybrid mission aimed at gathering information on violations experienced by civilians in Sudan since the onset of the conflict. The mission will focus on key areas related to human rights, including:

Civil and Political Rights: Instances of arbitrary detention, political repression, suppression of freedom of expression and assembly, and restrictions on political and civic engagement.

Economic and Social Rights: Denial of basic services such as food, healthcare, and education, along with the economic impacts of the conflict on the population.

Human Rights: Documenting violations of security and individual safety, such as enforced disappearances, torture, sexual violence, and violence against civilians amid ongoing conflict.

Environmental and Property Rights: Documenting environmental damage caused by the conflict, such as indiscriminate destruction of or seizure of property, and its impact on livelihoods.

– Collection of Documentation and Data:

Information will be collected through reports, testimonies, photos, and videos from victims and witnesses, with cooperation from humanitarian and human rights organizations to ensure transparency and accuracy.

The press conference detailed how submissions related to documenting human rights violations in Sudan can be made. Participants were invited to submit detailed reports and contributions containing specific details of incidents discussed, such as dates, locations, and involved parties, along with supporting evidence such as photographs, videos, or on-the-ground testimonies.

Contributors were also encouraged to provide practical recommendations on prevention and protection measures, including legal and policy frameworks needed to ensure accountability and end impunity.
