The Committee for Justice (CFJ) welcomed the announcement by the Teachers’ Committee in Al‑Jazirah State suspending the strike that had continued for more than two months, following assurances from the Federal Wages Committee that the demands of teachers in the state would be considered after the completion of efforts to address the wage file in Kassala State.
According to a statement issued by the Teachers’ Committee, the decision to suspend the strike was accompanied by an affirmation that efforts to pursue the issue would continue until all demands related to improving salaries and payment of financial entitlements are fully implemented.
According to information documented by CFJ, the strike was met with a range of punitive measures against a number of teachers, including arrests, arbitrary transfer decisions affecting more than 200 teachers in Greater Wad Madani locality, and administrative dismissals, allegedly linked to their participation in the strike and their demands for professional rights.
The Committee for Justice calls on the Sudanese authorities to honor the commitments made to teachers in Al‑Jazirah State, revoke all punitive measures imposed in connection with the strike, and ensure respect for the rights to association, organization, and peaceful protest, in a manner that protects teachers’ rights and contributes to the stability of the educational process.
