The Committee for Justice (CFJ) welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision ordering the release of journalist Rashan Oshi, following the acceptance of her appeal against the sentence previously issued against her, leading to her release from Omdurman Prison.
In May 2026, the Cybercrimes Court in Port Sudan sentenced Rashan Oshi to one year of imprisonment and imposed a fine of 10 million Sudanese pounds after convicting her of defamation and reputational harm in connection with a journalistic post she published on her Facebook page. The publication addressed allegations of financial corruption involving an officer serving at a Sudanese embassy abroad.
The Committee for Justice considers the release decision a positive step toward protecting freedom of the press and freedom of expression, and emphasizes the importance of refraining from using criminal laws to restrict journalistic work or punish journalists for carrying out their professional duties.
CFJ calls for ensuring a safe and independent environment for journalism, and for respecting the right to freedom of opinion and expression, in line with Sudan’s obligations under international human rights law.
