Sudan: Committee for Justice Documents the Death of Humanitarian Volunteer Al‑Tayeb Al‑Tom Mirsal Inside Shalla Prison and Calls for Disclosure of the Fate of Detainees

Reading Time: Less than 1 minute Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of humanitarian volunteer Al‑Tayeb Al‑Tom Mirsal inside Shalla Prison in the city of El Fasher, following his detention after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) established control over the city.

According to information documented by CFJ, Mirsal was among more than 3,000 detainees reportedly held in Shalla Prison and other locations that have been converted into detention facilities, including a number of private residences and buildings belonging to the University of El Fasher. Available information further indicates the absence of clear information regarding the humanitarian and health conditions of detainees held in these facilities.

The Committee for Justice calls for the immediate disclosure of the fate and whereabouts of all detainees in El Fasher, and urges that independent medical and humanitarian organizations be granted access to all places of detention in order to assess conditions and monitor the well‑being of those held.

CFJ also calls for guarantees of detainees’ safety and access to the necessary medical care, as well as the release of civilians held arbitrarily.

The Committee further demands an independent and transparent investigation into the death of Al‑Tayeb Al‑Tom Mirsal and any other violations allegedly committed against detainees, with accountability for those found responsible in accordance with applicable legal and human rights standards.
