Geneva – August 20, 2024

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented that the General Court in Atbara, Sudan, issued a death sentence by hanging on Sunday, August 11, against humanitarian activist Al-Dor Hamdoun Hamad, aged 24, on charges of belonging to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

Al-Dor had fled with her family from the battles in the “Al-Droshab” area to “Atbara,” where she worked as a laboratory technician at a health center and played a role in supporting and providing humanitarian aid to the displaced.

On May 13, she was detained at a military checkpoint belonging to the Sudanese army, where a medical prescription bearing the RSF logo was found in her possession. She has been held in custody since then until her trial.

CFJ rejects the death sentence issued against Al-Dor and demands that she be retried before a court that adheres to internationally recognized fair trial standards.

CFJ argues that such standards are currently not available in Sudan due to the ongoing conflict, which has affected the course of trials and led to their politicization, victimizing innocent individuals. Therefore, CFJ calls for the immediate and unconditional suspension of the sentence and the release of Al-Dor.
