Egypt: Committee for Justice Documents the Death of a Detainee Inside Al‑Salam Second Police Station in Cairo

Reading Time: Less than 1 minute Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of detainee Karim Mohamed (24 years old), a tuk‑tuk driver, following his detention at Al‑Salam Second Police Station (Al‑Nahda) in Cairo Governorate, while the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.

According to statements made by one of the deceased’s relatives to local media outlets, Karim was arrested approximately 12 days earlier following an altercation and remained detained at the police station until he was transferred to Al‑Salam Hospital, where his family was informed of his death. The relative further stated that the family had been unable to communicate with him during his detention and later received a phone call from Karim in which he reportedly asked to be rescued. He also said that another detainee informed the family, according to his account, that Karim had been subjected to assaults inside the detention facility.

The same source indicated that the family filed a complaint accusing a number of police officers and personnel, along with others, of responsibility for his death. The Public Prosecution subsequently ordered the preservation of the body and referred it to the Forensic Medicine Authority to determine the cause of death.

For its part, the Head of Investigations at Al‑Salam Second Police Station denied that Karim had been subjected to torture while in detention. He stated that the deceased had been detained in connection with a criminal case and had arrived at the station already injured as a result of an assault that allegedly occurred prior to his detention. He further asserted that another detainee later assaulted Karim inside the detention facility, adding that the incident had been documented and that the Public Prosecution ordered the detention of the alleged assailant for four days pending investigation. He also stated that Karim had been transferred to hospital for treatment before his death, and that the final cause of death would be determined by the forensic report.

With this case, the number of deaths documented by the Committee for Justice since the beginning of 2026 inside prisons and detention facilities in Egypt has risen to 35 deaths, following the documentation of 60 deaths during 2025.
