More than 200 drivers and sales representatives at “Atyab” food company, located on the Ismailia-Cairo Desert Road, have announced the end of their strike, which they had initiated in protest against the exclusion of overtime pay from their salaries and to demand the enforcement of the minimum wage.
The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has monitored the initiation of the strike within the company to implement these demands, and the strike was ultimately called off following promises from the Emirati management to address the workers’ concerns.
One employee stated that the official working hours are from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM; however, in practice, “we work endlessly.” He further noted that despite these sacrifices, he was shocked to find that the company’s management had deducted 1,400 EGP from his last salary. This deduction was part of a broader salary cut that affected all drivers and representatives, ranging from 700 to 2,800 EGP.
While CFJ welcomes the company’s swift response to the workers’ demands and its efforts to address them, the committee also calls for a review of employees’ conditions and the establishment of structured work regulations to ensure financial and social justice. This includes defining official working hours, setting and immediately disbursing overtime compensation, and enforcing the recently announced Egyptian government minimum wage of 7,000 EGP per month.
