On Thursday, January 16, the “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has reported the death of political detainee Metwally Abu Al-Majd Suleiman Mohammed (57 years old) in the high-security Gamasa Prison.
Abu Al-Majd, who worked as an independent contractor and held a degree in Islamic Studies from Al-Azhar University, resided in the Shubra El-Kheima area of Qalyubia Governorate.
According to available information, Abu Al-Majd’s death resulted from a heart attack. His health had deteriorated significantly within the detention facility, and he passed away after enduring inhumane conditions in prison. These conditions are believed to have directly contributed to the worsening of his health.
In response to this incident, CFJ strongly condemns what occurred, holding Egyptian authorities, specifically the Ministry of Interior and the Prison Authority, fully responsible for the poor detention conditions and the inhumane treatment the victim endured. The committee calls for immediate and transparent investigations and insists on holding those responsible accountable to prevent further impunity.
This unfortunate event underscores a troubling pattern within Egypt’s detention system, with CFJ’s monitoring revealing a total of 3 deaths within prisons and detention facilities since the commencement of 2025. CFJ continues to provide vital information through its “Justice Monitoring Archive,” which catalogs data on over 14,000 victims and 30,000 violations, shedding light on human rights abuses within more than 500 detention facilities across Egypt.
