The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the release of Hossam Bahgat, Executive Director of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, by Egypt’s State Security Prosecution on bail of 20,000 EGP.
Bahgat was interrogated in case no. 6 of 2025, where he faced accusations of participating in and financing a terrorist group, as well as spreading false news and information. This case is part of a series of legal actions initiated against the staff of the Egyptian Initiative since 2020.
Last week, the State Security Prosecution summoned Bahgat, requesting his appearance for questioning on January 19. The details of the accusations were not disclosed in advance. However, during the investigation, he was questioned about a statement issued by the Egyptian Initiative, which called on the Public Prosecutor to investigate the detention conditions of relatives of detainees in the 10th of Ramadan Prison. After more than three hours of questioning, the decision was made to release him on bail.
This case marks the fourth time that the Public Prosecution has pressed charges against staff members of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, a human rights organization that has faced increasing pressure from authorities in recent years.
CFJ strongly condemns the terrorism charges against Hossam Bahgat and demands the dismissal of all accusations against him, along with the cessation of investigations in this case. The committee also calls for an end to targeting Bahgat due to his human rights work and emphasizes the need to respect fundamental rights and freedoms in Egypt. CFJ urges authorities to create a safe environment for human rights defenders to carry out their legitimate and peaceful work securely.
