The wife of Egyptian lawyer and human rights defender, Mrs. Neama Hisham, has reported his continued detention in solitary confinement for over two months (60 days), in explicit violation of prison regulations and international humanitarian laws.

In a Facebook post, Mrs. Neama Hisham demanded an end to the violations against her husband and an end to the recent abuses he has faced. El-Baqer’s wife said, “I don’t know how to live while Baker is being held in solitary confinement for two months. Isn’t it enough that he has been detained for four years? Why solitary confinement? I swear I’ll go crazy.”

CFJ condemns the continued targeting of the human rights defender and lawyer, Mohamed el-Baqer, and demands Badr Prison 1‘s administration, where he is held, to put an end to the violations against him, respect his human rights, apply the Egyptian internal prison regulations, and respect international and humanitarian laws signed by Egypt.

Egyptian security forces had arrested Neama Hisham in the early morning of April 17, 2023, after she published a post about her husband being assaulted as a result of his objection, along with activists Mohamed Oxygen and Ahmed Douma, to the security forces’ attack on Hamed Sadek, who was detained in the same cell with them in Badr Prison 1. This happened because he refused to attend a renewal of his detention session before he was eventually released. El-Baqer’s wife confirmed that since that incident, her husband has been held in solitary confinement until now.
