CFJ issues weekly bulletin on updates of major human rights cases for the period from March 22 to 27, 2025

As part of its ongoing monitoring of legal developments related to key human rights cases in Egypt, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has released its weekly bulletin summarizing updates on major cases. The bulletin, published via its political case agenda, is designed to facilitate access to information on hearing dates and the latest developments in human rights cases in a simplified, accessible format. The updates for the period from March 22 to 27, 2025, are as follows:

  1. Case Name: Harmed Individuals Committees
    Date: Saturday, March 22, 2025
    Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the trial of 46 defendants in Case No. 380 of 2024 (Supreme State Security Felonies), registered as No. 14874 of 2024 Agouza Criminal Court, known in the media as the “Harmed Individuals Committees” case. The hearing was postponed to May 11 for pleadings.

 

  1. Case Name: Murder of Officer Wael Tahoun – Nasr City Special Operations Committees
    Date: Saturday, March 22, 2025
    Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the trial of 41 defendants in Case No. 1430 of 2018 (Supreme State Security Investigations), registered as No. 1149 of 2024 Nasr City Felonies. The case is known in the media as the “Nasr City Special Operations Committees” and involves alleged plans to bomb the Heliopolis Court and Nasr City Post Office. The session was postponed to May 11 for witness testimonies.

 

  1. Case Name: ISIS Qena Cell
    Date: Sunday, March 23, 2025
    Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the trial of defendants in Case No. 423 of 2023 (Supreme State Security Investigations), known in the media as the “ISIS Qena Cell,” to April 14 for defense pleadings. The defendants are Mohamed Arabi Abdel Aziz and Mohamed Safwat Abdel Wahab.

 

  1. Case Name: Fifth Settlement Cell
    Date: Monday, March 24, 2025
    Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, decided to adjourn the trial of 73 defendants in Case No. 11926 of 2022 Fifth Settlement Felonies, registered as No. 1237 of 2022 Cairo New Public Prosecution, and No. 627 of 2021 (Supreme State Security Investigations), known in the media as the “Fifth Settlement Cell,” to May 12 for the attendance of the detained defendants.

 

  1. Case Name: Brotherhood Mobilization and Preparation Cell
    Date: Monday, March 24, 2025
    Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance decided to adjourn the opening session in the trial of 54 defendants in the case known in the media as the “Brotherhood Mobilization and Preparation Cell,” registered as No. 142255 of 2024 Nasr City First Felonies, to May 25 for case review and preparation.

 

  1. Case Name: Marriott Cell
    Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2025
    Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, acquitted Anas Abdel Wahab Khalawi in the retrial of Case No. 1145 of 2014, known in the media as the “Marriott Cell,” of the charges brought against him.

 

  1. Case Name: Ultras Ahlawy
    Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2025
    Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the verdict in the retrial of defendant Mohamed Rifaat Khalafallah El-Samman in the case known in the media as “Ultras Ahlawy” to April 29. It is worth noting that the defendant had previously received a life sentence in absentia on June 10, 2015, on charges of power display and damaging public and private property.

 

  1. Case Name: Al-Daher Violence Incidents
    Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2025
    Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, sentenced Waheed Abdel Latif Ibrahim, defendant No. 51 in the referral order of Case No. 3480 of 2013 Daher Misdemeanors, known in the media as “Al-Daher Violence Incidents,” to three years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also ordered that the defendant be placed under police surveillance for three years following the completion of his sentence and required him to pay court costs.

 

  1. Case Name: Espionage with Libya
    Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2025
    Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
    Details: The Second Criminal Circuit of First Instance, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, issued a ruling in the retrial of defendant Hossam Salah Mabrouk Atta (32 years old), the ninth defendant in the referral order of Case No. 95 of 2018 Heliopolis First Felonies, known in the media as the “Espionage with Libya” case. The court ordered that he be placed under police surveillance for five years following the completion of his sentence, which was 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
