CFJ issues weekly bulletin on updates of major human rights cases for the period from March 15 to 20, 2025

As part of its ongoing monitoring of legal developments related to key human rights cases in Egypt, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has released its weekly bulletin summarizing updates on major cases. The bulletin, published via its political case agenda, was designed to facilitate access to information on the dates of hearings and the latest developments in human rights cases in a simplified format that is easy to access. The updates for the period from March 15 to 20, 2025, are as follows:

 

  1. Case Name: ISIS Sohag

  • Date: Saturday, March 15, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The First Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Said El-Sharbeni, decided to adjourn the trial of five members of the “ISIS Sohag Cell,” known as Case No. 426 of 2024, New Cairo Prosecution, registered as No. 13 of 2024 New Cairo Court, and recorded as No. 48 of 2024 State Security Criminal Court. The court scheduled the next session for June 14 to allow the full judicial panel to be present.

 

  1. Case Name: Hisham Ashmawy Cell

  • Date: Sunday, March 16, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The First Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Said El-Sharbeni, decided to adjourn the retrial of the defendant Ibrahim Obeid Abdel-Wanis, identified as Defendant No. 7 in the referral order for the case known in the media as the “Hisham Ashmawy Cell.” The case is registered as No. 32 of 2021 Emergency State Security Criminal Court in Warraq, recorded as No. 9 of 2021 North Giza Criminal Court, and listed as No. 385 of 2020 Supreme State Security Criminal Court. The next hearing was scheduled for May 18 to allow for review and preparation for the defense.
    It is noteworthy that the defendant undergoing retrial had previously been sentenced in absentia to seven years of rigorous imprisonment on charges of joining and financing a terrorist organization, participating in a criminal agreement, and possessing weapons and ammunition.

 

  1. Case Name: Revolutionary Guards

  • Date: Monday, March 17, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The First Criminal Court of First Instance, presided over by Judge Mohamed El-Said El-Sharbeni, decided to adjourn the retrial proceedings of Abdel-Hamid Maher Abdel-Hamid, accused of leading and managing a terrorist organization known in the media as the “Revolutionary Guards,” to May 19 for document submission.
