CFJ issues weekly bulletin on updates of major human rights cases for the period from January 25 to 30, 2025

As part of its continuous monitoring of the legal developments related to key human rights cases in Egypt, the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has released its weekly bulletin summarizing updates on major cases. The bulletin, published via its political case agenda, was designed to facilitate access to information on the dates of hearings and the latest developments in human rights cases in a simplified format. The updates for the period from January 25 to 30, 2025, are as follows:

 

  1. Case Name: Marriott Cell

  • Date: Saturday, January 25, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Circuit for Terrorism Cases, presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the retrial of a defendant in the case known in the media as the “Marriott Cell” to March 8, 2025, for defense arguments.
  1. Case Name: Lebanon Square Events

  • Date: Sunday, January 26, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, reserved the retrial of Islam Mohamed Ahmed, who is accused of protesting, inciting riots, and possessing birdshot and fireworks, in Case No. 22739/2014 (Agouza Criminal Court), known in the media as the “Lebanon Square Events” case, for judgment on February 25, 2025. The defendant had previously been sentenced in absentia to five years of rigorous imprisonment on April 7, 2016, with the confiscation of seized materials.
  1. Case Name: Harmed Committees

  • Date: Sunday, January 26, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 46 defendants in Case No. 380/2024 (Supreme State Security Criminal Court), registered as No. 14874/2024 (Agouza Criminal Court), known in the media as the “Harmed Committees” case, to February 22, 2025, for witness hearings, while keeping the defendants in custody.
  1. Case Name: ISIS Qena Cell

  • Date: Sunday, January 26, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of Mohamed Arabi Abdel Aziz and Mohamed Safwat Abdel Wahab in Case No. 423/2023 (Supreme State Security Prosecution), known in the media as the “ISIS Qena Cell” case, to January 28, 2025, for prosecution pleadings.
  1. Case Name: False News on Tiran and Sanafir Agreement

  • Date: Sunday, January 26, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, reserved the retrial of Ahmed Yasser Ali Abdel Hafiz, who is the 24th defendant in the indictment order, for judgment on February 25, 2025. The defendant was previously sentenced to life imprisonment with five years of police surveillance on charges of spreading false news regarding the Tiran and Sanafir Agreement.
  1. Case Name: Yahya Moussa and 57 Others for Joining ISIS

  • Date: Monday, January 27, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of Muslim Brotherhood leader Yahya Moussa and 57 others—accused of joining ISIS and planning terrorist attacks—in Case No. 55/2024 (Supreme State Security Criminal Court), registered as No. 1235/2024 (Omraneya Criminal Court), to March 9, 2025, for witness hearings.
  1. Case Name: Kerdasa Explosives Cell

  • Date: Monday, January 27, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 13 defendants in Case No. 16563/2023 (Kerdasa Criminal Court), registered as No. 2529/2023 (Supreme State Security Prosecution), known in the media as the “Kerdasa Explosives Cell” case, to March 8, 2025, for witness hearings.
  1. Case Name: Wilayat Delta

  • Date: Tuesday, January 28, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdy Mohamed Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of nine defendants in Case No. 379/2024 (Supreme State Security Criminal Court), registered as No. 13552/2024 (Helwan Criminal Court), known in the media as the “Wilayat Delta” case, to February 25, 2025, pending a social expert’s report on two juvenile defendants.
  1. Case Name: ISIS Qena Cell (Second Hearing)

  • Date: Tuesday, January 28, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of Mohamed Arabi Abdel Aziz and Mohamed Safwat Abdel Wahab in Case No. 423/2023 (Supreme State Security Prosecution), to February 25, 2025, for defense pleadings.
  1. Case Name: Officer Wael Tahoun’s Murder – Specialized Operations Committees

  • Date: Tuesday, January 28, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the trial of 41 defendants in Case No. 1430/2018 (Supreme State Security Prosecution), registered as No. 11149/2024 (Nozha Criminal Court), known in the media as the “Specialized Operations Committees in Nozha” case, to February 25, 2025, for witness hearings.
  1. Case Name: Ultras Ahlawy

  • Date: Tuesday, January 28, 2025
  • Location: Courts Complex, Badr Prison Compound
  • Details: The Second Criminal Court (First Instance), presided over by Judge Wagdy Abdel Moneim, postponed the retrial of Mohamed Rifaat Khalafallah El-Samman in the case known in the media as “Ultras Ahlawy”, to February 10, 2025, for submission of documents. The defendant had previously been sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment on June 10, 2015.
