Libya: Committee for Justice Documents Escalating Protests in the Health Sector Over Wages and the Arrest of Doctors, Calls for the Protection of Workers’ Rights

Reading Time: Less than 1 minute Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the continuation of sit-ins and protest actions by doctors and healthcare workers at a number of medical facilities across Libya, including Tripoli University Hospital, in protest against recent salary policies and in pursuit of improved living and professional conditions.

According to information documented by CFJ, the protests were met by the detention of four healthcare workers, who were placed under investigation in connection with allegations of medical negligence before being released at a later stage, according to statements issued by the Tripoli Doctors’ Syndicate.

The Committee noted that healthcare workers’ demands include:

  • Increasing salaries in line with rising living costs.
  • Ensuring the regular payment of wages.
  • Providing essential medicines and medical supplies.
  • Improving working conditions within healthcare institutions.
  • Strengthening professional protections for medical staff.

CFJ further documented warnings from medical personnel at Tripoli University Hospital that the movement could escalate to work stoppages or collective resignations if their demands remain unaddressed, while emphasizing their commitment to continuing care for emergency and critical cases.

The Committee for Justice stresses that safeguarding the rights of healthcare professionals is essential to maintaining the stability and effectiveness of the health sector, particularly given the challenges facing medical institutions and the increasing pressures on healthcare workers.

CFJ calls on the Libyan authorities to:

  • Engage constructively with the demands of healthcare workers.
  • Address the financial and administrative challenges affecting the healthcare sector.
  • Guarantee fair legal procedures and transparent investigations for any healthcare workers subjected to questioning or detention.
  • Refrain from measures that could undermine the legitimate exercise of labor and professional rights.
  • Provide the resources necessary to protect both patients and healthcare personnel and ensure the continuity of medical services.

The Committee also emphasizes the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue and institutional reforms that improve working conditions, strengthen healthcare services, and preserve the rights and dignity of medical professionals.
