Sudan: Committee for Justice Condemns a 10‑Year Prison Sentence Against a Community Leader in West Kordofan

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has condemned the ruling issued by the Omdurman Criminal Court sentencing Bishra Doleib, a prominent community leader from West Kordofan State, to ten years’ imprisonment, and expressed deep concern over allegations that the proceedings lacked the fundamental guarantees of a fair trial.

CFJ emphasized that respect for fair trial guarantees, including the right of the accused to an independent and impartial trial based on sufficient legal evidence, constitutes a cornerstone of the rule of law, and that any failure to uphold these safeguards undermines confidence in the justice system.

The Committee for Justice calls for ensuring that the convicted individual is able to fully exercise his right to appeal before the competent judicial authorities, and for a review of the case in a manner that guarantees compliance with fair trial standards and relevant legal obligations.

CFJ further stresses the importance of ensuring that criminal proceedings are not used to target community leaders or restrict fundamental rights, and calls for adherence to legal safeguards and due process in all judicial proceedings.
