Egypt: Committee for Justice Monitors Death of Political Detainee in Minya Prison Due to Medical Negligence

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice has monitored the death of Saleh Ayed Rabie, a political detainee, inside Minya Prison on Monday, October 13, 2025, reportedly due to medical negligence.

According to CFJ, Rabie had been suffering from advanced cancer for nearly eight months prior to his death. Despite his deteriorating condition, prison authorities failed to provide adequate medical care or respond to repeated requests to transfer him to a specialized hospital.

Rabie was arrested by Egyptian security forces in January 2014 and had remained in detention since then in connection with a case known in the media as the “Helwan Break-in”.

CFJ reported that Egyptian authorities handed over Rabie’s body to his family two days after his death, but refused to allow funeral prayers. He was buried at 3:00 AM in his family’s cemetery.

CFJ condemned the deliberate medical neglect by Minya Prison administration, holding Egyptian authorities fully responsible for Rabie’s death. The organization called for an independent investigation into the circumstances of his death, accountability for those responsible, and an end to impunity.

With this case, the number of deaths monitored by CFJ inside Egyptian prisons and detention centers since the beginning of 2025 has risen to 48, following the documentation of 50 deaths throughout 2024.
