Egypt: CFJ Supports Alexandria Water Workers and Calls for the Implementation of Court Rulings and the Minimum Wage

The “Committee for Justice” (CFJ) has declared support for the plea issued by workers of the Alexandria Drinking Water and Sanitation Company, in which they urge the relevant government authorities to urgently intervene and enforce court rulings that oblige the Holding Company to pay the overdue exceptional bonuses that have been withheld for years, in addition to applying the minimum wage in accordance with Egyptian labor laws.

This plea follows a series of protests organized by the workers at various Alexandria water stations, including “Manshiyya 1,” “Nozha,” and “Seyouf,” demanding the payment of overdue bonuses dating back to 2016.

The workers had previously received promises from the Holding Company’s chairman to review their demands; however, those promises have yet to materialize into concrete actions.

The Manpower Committee of the House of Representatives is scheduled to hold a meeting on March 23 to discuss the progress of its previous recommendations, which urged the Ministry of Finance to support the company in expediting the payment of bonuses and ensuring sufficient financial resources for implementing the minimum wage.

CFJ condemns the delaying tactics employed by the company’s management in enforcing these court rulings, stressing the importance of upholding the law and promptly executing the judgments. The committee also calls on the company’s management to engage positively with the workers’ demands, particularly regarding the implementation of the minimum wage, in compliance with Egyptian labor laws that obligate the company to adhere to such standards.
