Press Release
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has observed the deteriorating health condition of Aber Moussa, leader of the Free Constitutional Party in Tunisia, who remains in detention. According to her defense team, Moussa is suffering from what they described as “medical exhaustion” due to detention practices that violate her fundamental rights, despite medical recommendations issued by her supervising doctors.
In a statement released on Friday, November 8, her defense team revealed that Moussa was brought to the Tunis Primary Court earlier that day at the request of the Chief Investigating Judge in the “Registry Office” case. However, she was reportedly left standing in a holding room for nearly three hours without being provided a chair, despite her worsening health.
The statement added that Moussa’s condition required intervention from a Civil Protection medical team, which assessed her health and confirmed the urgent need for medical care. As a result, the investigation session was postponed to November 13, and an official report on the incident was filed.
– Condemnation and calls for urgent action:
Moussa’s defense team expressed strong disapproval of these actions, describing them as “mistreatment” and a clear violation of human rights. They emphasized that her health condition is well-known to the public and the judicial authorities, who were officially informed about her deteriorating state.
The defense team renewed their call to the Attorney General at the Court of Appeals and the Public Prosecutor at the Tunis Primary Court to intervene urgently and prevent the recurrence of such violations, which pose a serious threat to Moussa’s life.
– Moussa accuses authorities of mistreatment:
In a previous message from prison, Aber Moussa accused Tunisian authorities of adopting a policy of deliberate mistreatment against her. She alleged that the responsible parties intentionally obstructed her medical care, stating that what she is experiencing goes beyond medical neglect to deliberate health depletion.
Moussa, who has been detained since October 3, 2023, was arrested while filing appeals against presidential orders at the Registry Office of the Presidency of the Republic. She faces several legal charges, including the “Registry Office” case and complaints filed against her by the Electoral Commission.
– CFJ calls for medical care for Moussa:
CFJ emphasized the importance of adhering to international human rights standards, noting that ensuring appropriate health conditions for detainees is a fundamental legal and ethical obligation of the state. The committee also urged a review of current procedures to ensure the protection of all detainees’ rights, regardless of their background or the cases against them. CFJ warned that any violation of these rights could harm Tunisia’s international reputation and undermine the credibility of its judicial system.
CFJ calls on Tunisian authorities to comply with medical recommendations issued by the team of doctors overseeing Moussa’s condition and to provide her with immediate medical care. The committee stressed the need to avoid practices that could worsen her health, such as forcing her to stand for prolonged periods without medical justification, as these actions pose a significant threat to her life.
