Press release
Geneva – February 25, 2024
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) is advocating for the release of prominent Tunisian blogger, civil society activist, and human rights defender Kawthar, who was subjected to a detention order on February 16. The order, issued by Tunisian Al-Kouki authorities, is in response to a complaint filed by the Public Prosecution under Article 24 of Decree 54 of 2022, aimed at addressing “crimes related to information and communication systems.”
Al-Kouki was arrested on February 14 after exposing suspicions of financial irregularities within the Tunisian Ministry of Interior. Notably, Al-Kouki had previously unveiled a corruption file within a Central Bank of Tunisia public institution, leading to her suspension and eventual dismissal in June 2023. The ongoing investigation into this matter remains shrouded in ambiguity.
CFJ calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Kawthar Al-Kouki, condemning what it perceives to be lenient detention measures employed by the authorities. The committee emphasizes Al-Kouki’s crucial role as a blogger and human rights advocate, advocating for societal transparency and accountability.
In addition to demanding Al-Kouki’s release, CFJ reiterates its condemnation of the content of Decree 54 of 2022. The committee expresses concern over its targeted and stereotypical application, restricting freedom of opinion and expression in Tunisia. CFJ urges the authorities to conduct a comprehensive review of the legislation, ensuring its alignment with principles that uphold fundamental rights without compromising Tunisia’s democratic fabric.
