The Committee for Justice has denounced a verdict issued by the Tunisian Summer Criminal Chamber against human rights defender and head of the Free Constitutional Party, Abir Moussi, sentencing her to two years in prison on charges of insulting the Electoral Commission.

The ruling was handed down on Tuesday, August 6th, following a complaint filed by the Independent High Authority for Elections against Moussi over a media statement she made earlier in 2023 regarding the Commission’s performance.

The Committee noted that “Abir Moussi appeared in court while already in detention, as she has been imprisoned since last October.”

Moussi was arrested in October in front of the Presidential Palace when she attempted to file an appeal against a presidential decree. She has since faced charges related to the handling of personal data, obstruction of the right to work, and inciting disorder.

CFJ rejects the verdict against Moussi, viewing it as a suppression of freedom of opinion and expression. CFJ also demands her immediate and unconditional release and calls for an environment that allows her to safely and effectively express her views and engage in her human rights and political activities.
