Press Release

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the Tunisian authorities’ targeting of prominent activists who oppose normalization and support the Palestinian cause, including journalist Ghassan Ben Khalifa and young activist Usama Al-Obeidi.

Ben Khalifa, known for his opposition to political normalization and his unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, is scheduled for another trial session before the Fifth Criminal Circuit (Terrorism) on Tuesday, November 19. CFJ views this case as an attempt to curtail his human rights and political activities.

Similarly, CFJ noted the detention of activist Usama Al-Obeidi on Tuesday, November 5, following his social media posts supporting Palestinian resistance. He was held at the Bouchebsha detention center before being released, and he now awaits trial.

CFJ expressed its concern over the Tunisian judiciary’s role in restricting freedom of expression and pursuing those who support the Palestinian cause. The committee affirmed full solidarity with both Ghassan Ben Khalifa and Usama Al-Obeidi, condemning what it described as “targeting defenders based on their opinions and political stances.”

CFJ calls for all charges against Ben Khalifa and Al-Obeidi to be dropped, for an end to the arbitrary measures against them, and for their cases to be permanently closed. Furthermore, CFJ demands a safe and supportive environment for them to exercise their rights to freedom of expression and political participation securely and effectively.
