Press Release

The Tunisian judiciary has requested that Interpol list political activist and blogger Thamer Bedida as a wanted individual, according to a statement from Hanan Kedas, the official spokesperson for the Anti-Terrorism Judicial Pole, made during interviews with local media.

– Sentences could reach 10 years in prison:

Kedas explained that the Public Prosecution at the Anti-Terrorism Judicial Pole has opened an investigation against Bedida, who was previously a supporter of Tunisian President Kais Saied before recently switching his support to Saied’s rival in the presidential elections, Al-Ayachi Zammel.

She noted that Bedida is facing serious charges, including “forming a terrorist group,” “inciting others to join it,” “conspiring against state security (both internal and external),” and “attempting to change the structure of the state.”

Kedas added that if these charges are proven, Bedida could face a prison sentence exceeding ten years, along with hefty fines, under Decree 54, which addresses crimes related to information and communication systems.

– Condemnation and calls to end arbitrary actions:

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) condemns the actions taken against the Tunisian political activist and blogger Thamer Bedida, considering them a blatant violation of the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Tunisian constitution and the international agreements to which Tunisia is a signatory.

CFJ expressed its concern over the targeting of activists due to their political opinions, emphasizing that freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democracy. CFJ calls for the charges against Bedida to be dropped and for the persecution of activists and political opponents to end. The committee also warned of the potential consequences of these actions on human rights and the political climate in the country.
