The UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria has called on incoming authorities in the country to take immediate measures to end the 13-year cycle of violence, which has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands and displaced millions.

In its statement, the commission emphasized that ongoing gross human rights violations only exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and undermine efforts toward achieving peace and stability in Syria.

The commission urged the new authorities to prioritize justice and accountability by ending impunity. It stressed the importance of releasing all those arbitrarily detained and revealing the fate of the forcibly disappeared as essential steps to building trust among different factions and fostering societal reconciliation.

The statement also highlighted the deteriorating humanitarian situation, calling for unhindered access to humanitarian aid for all in need, regardless of their location or political affiliations. Achieving this goal, it noted, requires full cooperation from all active parties on the ground, including the Syrian government and armed groups.

The commission pointed to the necessity of addressing the root causes of the conflict, such as economic and social marginalization and human rights violations that initially triggered the crisis. It affirmed that strengthening transitional justice mechanisms and supporting Syrian civil society are cornerstones for achieving a comprehensive and sustainable political transition.

The commission concluded its statement by underlining the international community’s responsibility to support the Syrian people during this critical period. It called for intensified global efforts to ensure the implementation of relevant UN resolutions, including Resolution 2254, which advocates for an inclusive political solution to the Syrian crisis.
