UN human rights experts have called for urgent international intervention to support survivors of gender-based violence in Sudan and to halt the escalating violence in the country.
In a statement issued by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the experts highlighted the dire situation faced by women and girls amid the ongoing conflict, especially in the Darfur region and other conflict-affected areas.
– Increase in Sexual Violence:
The experts emphasized that the conflict, which has intensified since April 2023, has exacerbated the vulnerability of women and girls, leading to an increase in incidents of sexual violence, including rape and sexual enslavement.
The experts condemned these acts as war crimes and crimes against humanity, calling on Sudanese authorities and armed groups to immediately cease all forms of violence against women and girls, ensure their protection, and provide comprehensive support to survivors.
They stated, “Women and girls are bearing the brunt of the violence in Sudan, and the international community must act now to provide the necessary support and resources.” They stressed the need for urgent measures, including access to medical care, psychosocial support, legal assistance for survivors of gender-based violence, and the establishment of safe shelters.
– Calls for Accountability Mechanisms:
UN experts also called for the establishment of accountability mechanisms to investigate and prosecute those responsible for gender-based violence in Sudan. They urged the international community to enhance its support for local and international organizations working on the ground to assist survivors and prevent further violence.
The call for action comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where the ongoing conflict has displaced millions and created a severe shortage of basic necessities. The UN experts underscored the importance of international solidarity and immediate action to protect the most vulnerable and promote peace and security in Sudan.
