Sudan: Committee for Justice Expresses Concern Over Five-Year Prison Sentence Against Activist Alaa El‑Din Al‑Sharif

Less than 1 minute Reading Time: Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the issuance of a ruling by the Gedaref Criminal Court sentencing activist Alaa El‑Din Al‑Sharif to five years’ imprisonment, under Article 51 and other provisions of the Sudanese Criminal Code, on charges related to alleged cooperation with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to information documented by CFJ, Alaa El‑Din Al‑Sharif was arrested on 15 January 2026 by Military Intelligence, before being subjected to a period of enforced disappearance following his arrest, raising concerns regarding the impact of these practices on his legal rights and fair trial guarantees.

Available information indicates that the case was based primarily on accusations linked to content and posts published on social media platforms, amid a broader context of increasing judicial prosecutions targeting activists and civil actors under charges of a political and security nature.

The Committee for Justice expressed concern over allegations of procedural and legal violations during the investigation and trial stages, including claims of enforced disappearance and pretrial detention, and the possible impact of these violations on the defendant’s right to defense and a fair trial.

CFJ calls for ensuring Alaa El‑Din Al‑Sharif’s right to appeal the ruling before competent judicial authorities, and for conducting an independent review of the procedures surrounding his arrest and trial, in order to guarantee respect for due process standards and the fair trial guarantees stipulated under national law and international human rights instruments.
