The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the issuance of an arrest warrant against journalist Hanan Abdel Hamid, widely known as “Um Waddah,” in connection with a criminal case related to cybercrime offences.
According to a notice issued by the Cybercrime Prosecution, the journalist was ordered to surrender herself to the nearest police station or police post within two weeks of the publication of the notice, pursuant to Article 78 of the Criminal Procedure Act of 1991, in connection with a criminal case brought under Articles 24, 25, and 26 of the Cybercrime Act.
According to the notice, the arrest warrant was issued on the grounds that she was allegedly evading arrest in order to prevent its execution. The prosecution also called upon the public to assist in implementing the warrant in accordance with applicable legal procedures.
The Committee for Justice expressed concern over the use of cybercrime legislation against journalists and media professionals, noting that such measures raise concerns regarding their impact on press freedom and freedom of expression.
CFJ calls for ensuring respect for the due process rights of journalists, and for refraining from using criminal legislation as a means of restricting journalistic work or limiting the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
