Sudan: Committee for Justice Documents the Death of Detainee Bashir Al‑Mikoubi Inside Dagris Prison Amid Reports of Deteriorating Health and Humanitarian Conditions

Reading Time: Less than 1 minute Minutes

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has documented the death of Bashir Al‑Mikoubi, a security police officer from the city of El Daein in East Darfur State, while in detention at Dagris Prison, located west of Nyala in South Darfur State, following a deterioration in his health condition.

According to information documented by CFJ, the death occurred several days before his family became aware of it. His relatives reportedly learned of his death only by chance through a detainee who had recently been released from the prison.

The incident comes amid recurring reports concerning the deterioration of health and humanitarian conditions inside Dagris Prison, where numerous detainees have reportedly been transferred following arrest campaigns conducted by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) across Darfur states since the outbreak of the conflict. Those detained have reportedly included military personnel, political figures, traditional community leaders, and civilians.

Available information indicates ongoing concerns regarding inadequate medical care, insufficient food, and the prolonged detention of individuals without trial. The Committee also noted previous reports of deaths among detainees held at the prison under similar health-related circumstances.

The Committee for Justice calls for the full disclosure of the circumstances surrounding the death of Bashir Al‑Mikoubi and the opening of an independent, impartial, and transparent investigation to determine the causes of death and establish any responsibility for it.

CFJ further calls for:

  • Ensuring that families are promptly informed of the fate and whereabouts of detained relatives.
  • Granting independent humanitarian organizations access to Dagris Prison to assess detainees’ conditions.
  • Providing detainees with adequate food, medical care, and other essential services.
  • Releasing individuals held arbitrarily or without a sufficient legal basis.
  • Ensuring that all detention procedures comply with applicable legal safeguards and fair trial standards.

The Committee emphasizes that all detainees are entitled to humane treatment and protection of their fundamental rights, including access to healthcare and legal guarantees, in accordance with international human rights and humanitarian law standards.
