Press release
Geneva – June 30, 2024
The Committee for Justice (CFJ) has monitored the arrest of human rights activist and former member of parliament, Seham Hassan Hasaballah, by forces affiliated with the so-called “Joint Forces Intelligence” loyal to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Tuesday, June 25.
This marks the second arrest of Hasaballah, who has previously been detained for nine days. During her first detention, she was subjected to whipping, verbal abuse, and harassment. The “Joint Forces Intelligence” has again detained her at an undisclosed location.
Hasaballah is a prominent leader in the Liberation and Justice Movement, which signed the Doha Peace Agreement during the regime of ousted President Omar al-Bashir. She served two terms as a parliamentarian.
CFJ condemns the abuses suffered by Hasaballah during her detention and demands that the detaining authority immediately disclose her whereabouts and the conditions of her detention. CFJ also calls for her immediate release and an end to the targeting of her.
