Geneva – March 4, 2024

The Committee for Justice (CFJ) condemned the recent arrest of Sheikh Abdul Razek Suleiman, a prominent leader of displaced persons camps in Central Darfur, by the intelligence services of the Rapid Support Militia in Sudan. CFJ calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Sheikh Suleiman and urges a cessation of fighting to address the country’s pressing humanitarian and security concerns.

Sheikh Abdul Razek Suleiman was apprehended in mid-February by the Rapid Support Forces as he led a delegation to meet with officials from the Humanitarian Aid Commission. The meeting aimed to discuss strategies for delivering crucial aid to the displaced population. His arrest occurred amidst

public statements highlighting the worsening humanitarian and security conditions in the displaced persons camps, emphasizing the urgent need for relief assistance.

CFJ’s monitoring team underscores that Sheikh Suleiman’s arrest is a direct response to his efforts to address the pressing issues the displaced population faces. CFJ rejects the detention carried out by the intelligence services of the Rapid Support Militia and calls for Sheikh Suleiman’s immediate release.

In light of this situation, CFJ emphasizes the necessity for a ceasefire to address Sudan’s deteriorating humanitarian and security conditions. CFJ calls upon all relevant authorities to prioritize the well-being of the affected population and engage in constructive dialogue to find lasting solutions to the challenges faced by the displaced persons.
